She wanted something princess, pink, and perfect for tea. Here mom picked out a few elements and then let me have some fun with the rest. I am super pumped about how they turned out. I can't wait to make some more for my own daughter's birthday. If you are interested in having custom cookies made, please click here for more information.

Here is the entire platter all together. There were 18 cookies ordered. I did ribbon banners that said "Happy Birthday" and "Charlotte", tiaras, bouquets of flowers, and hearts. She chose two different colors of pink. The green and white were added to help the designs stand out.

My little girls were never interested but I know how super popular it is with the boys. A super cool mom decided to throw a Pokemon party in honor of the 20th anniversary and wanted cookies to give the boys as party favors.
They are perfect when you just want a little bite. These vintage rose cookies are perfect for Mother's Day Tea, Valentine's Day, or just to say "thanks". These look lovely in a small mason jar tied with a beautiful ribbon. These bite size cookies also go well when mixed in with larger cookies on a platter.
Who doesn't love all the red and pink, hearts and flowers? I made these Valentine's cookies for this year's holiday. They are available individually or in a platter. Cookies wrapped up individually are in clear bags and tied with a coordinating ribbon. You can add any little tag to use these as classroom Valentines. These cookies can also be put on sticks to make cookie pops and put into a lovely bouquet. For orders, please click here.
I also love the idea of taking a basic shape and turning it into a themed cookie. So... here are some square Christmas cookies using the bright colors of red, green, teal, white, and black. I made these with no particular purpose in mind but I ended up using these as teacher gifts. Each one in a little clear bag looked so adorable. There was a tiny bit of left over dough so I made a few bit size cookies as well. If you are interested in ordering some cookies, click here for details.
The cookies were to be given as party favors to all the little guests. I made four designs... a tiara, blue snowflake, white snowflake, and a #5. Each of the cookies were individually wrapped in a clear bag and tied with a silver twist tie. If you would like to order some cookies for a special event, please click here.
Yes, I say sweet because I am working the entire day so he will have all the prep and cooking to do himself. Of course I had to make some Thanksgiving cookies to go with our meal. There are SO many cute design ideas floating around out there so I pulled a few of my favorites and gave them a try. This tray is a dozen regular size cookies plus a dozen bite size. I love to put the little ones in with big ones. It helps to really make the tray look full and they are just such fun little sample cookies. If you would like to order some of these yummies, click here for details.
The kids are heading back to school in just a couple weeks and I am so sad. I love it when they are home! Besides, who is going to help me with my Stitch Fix reviews when they are back at school :-)

This month's box just arrived and I decided to do another video. I generally am not one to want to see myself on camera or share myself with the world so last month I felt totally strange doing an un-boxing video. However, I got a lot of positive comments so I figured I could do it again. Plus, I have become obsessed with watching other people's videos too so I want to contribute myself. Here goes!

This time I added in some quick shots of me trying on the clothes. Please have mercy on me. I have zero knowledge on how to edit a video so I mashed these up together as best I could.

Here's my style card from this months' fix. I love how personalized this service is.

Okay so the clothes. I accidentally sent back the items I didn't want prior to taking photos so I only have the pictures from the two items I kept. I will go ahead and show you the style cards for the other items though.

Andrew Marc Cora Shift Dress, Size L, $78

I just didn't like this dress. It was a bit more tight that I am comfortable with and I felt like it was a bit plain. If I am going to spend big bucks on clothes, I have to LOVE them. I didn't love this. Verdict: RETURNED

Renee C Lahna Printed Dress, Size L, $78

This is a pretty cool dress and definitely had that "different" factor I was looking for. However, it was too tight in the chest and was a little more snug all over than I would like. The main problem though was the side seams. They did not match AT ALL. Not cool. Not cool at all. This shows poor quality and I certainly let Stitch Fix know when I reviewed the clothes. Verdict: RETURNED

Papermoon Wynn Blouse, Size L, $48 (I think)

This blouse was so-so but had a few issues that I can't live with. One, it's super sheer so in my opinion it should have come with a cami to wear under it. Second, the pockets on the breast look like some kind of strange exterior bra. Un, no thank you. Finally, it was snug in the arms and made me feel like I was wearing a straight jacket. Verdict: RETURNED

Brixon Ivy Pinson Drape Cardigan, Size L, $48 (I think)

Don't you love this??!! I think it's fantastic. I have already worn it out during the day with just some jeans and a cami and then I have worn it to work with some dressier pants. It's perfect. It adds a layer of whimsy and romance to my wardrobe. The style card has it paired with a dress and a colored shirt and I don't know if I'm that adventurous yet. For now I will keep this styled over a white shirt. Verdict: KEPT
One word for these pants: Perfection. These are the most comfortable and versitile pants I have ever seen. They will be great in summer or winter, with casual shirts or a dressy blouse. I love them. I love them so much I have asked for them in every color and style they come in. Victoria if you are reading this, SEND MORE EMER PANTS! Verdict: KEPT
I have become obsessed with reading other people's review's of their Stitch Fix boxes and from there I discovered Stitch Fix un-boxings on YouTube. Sounds silly I know. A girl needs a get-away sometimes and this has become mine. There is just something so fun about watching people open a surprise. You also get to see the clothes on video so you see more about what you may like or dislike. A couple friends asked me if they could see me actually open the box so I thought, what the heck, I should video an un-boxing myself. Since I have never even turned on the webcam on my computer I thought it would be too hard but it ended up being a breeze. The quality is not very good so please forgive me but here goes.....

Man the sound and video quality on that thing are terrible. Sorry about that! At least you get the idea. Now, as is typical of Stitch Fix clothing, my opinions of the clothes totally changed when I put everything on. If you read this before 7/10/15, please please comment below with your opinions of what I should keep or return. I am totally stuck!!!

Just in case you have no idea what I am talking about here, Stitch Fix is a clothing subscription service where you pay $20 for a stylist to pick out 5 items for you based on a style profile you fill out and a Pinterest page you create. You can set the boxes to come as frequently or infrequently as you would like. When the box comes, you have 3 days to decide what you want to keep and to return all the rest. You fill out very detailed reviews of the clothing so that the stylist can get a better idea of what you like or dislike for your next fix. The $20 styling fee is taken off any of the items you keep. I am NOT affiliated with Stitch Fix in any way. They have no idea who I am. I just really like the service and love talking about it. If you join Stitch Fix from my link, I do get a $25 credit from Stitch Fix. This is the same for everyone.
If you watched the video you know that I was not very excited about this top. I liked the color and the polka dots but I was unsure of the length and the flowy-ness (Is that a word?). Well all things changed when I put it on. This material is THE softest jersey cotton ever. It seriously feels like wearing a cloud. The sleeves are a perfect length and they have a bit of soft elastic around them that is not too tight or too loose. The length seems to be fine and I love the criss-cross detail in the back. The other good thing is that my husband loves it too. Win! The price is way over what I normally would pay but I know I will get a lot of use out of this shirt. I can wear it for play and for work which is huge. Verdit: Kept!
I just put a picture of my ass on the internet. Please forgive me. I was not impressed with these shorts when I took them out of the box but they did fit and I gave them a good try. They are shorter than I normally wear and they sit low which I don't like that much. But, when I came out wearing them my husband loved them (you will notice a theme here). I wore them for about an hour to see what I thought. I am not in love with the color. They look like "mom jeans" however, I am a mom and I'm almost 40. Can you tell I was torn? Then I saw these photos. No. I do not like the way these look. For $58 they better be the best looking shorts in the world. Verdict: Returned
Once again, my husband loves this shirt but I am just not sure. I love love the color and detail at the top. It's just perfect. The feel of this shirt is great. The material is soft and well made. However, the arms are just a bit too snug and for some reason it sits funny on my boobs. I promise I am wearing a good bra in these photos but something is just not right. I love the look from the back but again, for the price, I have to LOVE everything about this in order to buy it. Verdict: Probably Retun (any opinions?)
Another butt shot. Sorry about that. Once again, my husband loved these. He really wanted me to keep the entire box. Well, he didn't see the prices. Because these pants are EXPENSIVE! I mean I never spend over $100 on a pair of pants. Never. I would possibly consider it if they were regular jeans that I could wear all summer, fall, winter, and spring but not these. I mean I love them. They fit (and they are a size smaller than last month, yay) but they are so expensive. Did I mention how expensive they are? I am torn. I want them. I think I would vomit every time I put them on. And then what happens when I sit on something my kid spilled. I can just picture my $100+ pants with a neutella spot on the butt. Verdict: Likely returned but with a big fat frowning face.
I really don't want to like this dress. But I do. These pictures just solidified my opinion that I really like the way this dress looks. I love the color, the cut, the fit, the everything. It's a bit shorter than I'm used to but my husband says it has a retro look that he loves. Here is the problem, the fabric. Everything from Stitch Fix feels like a dream. Except this dress. The material is polyester and it feels so rough. It feels cheep and poorly made. There are bits of thread coming out all over one of the arm hole areas and the stitching near the neckline is not great. Why oh why can't this dress be prefect? I think the price is fine for a dress and I have two family weddings coming up with lots of wedding showers to attend. This dress would be perfect. I just can't get over the quality. Verdict: I don't know! I want to keep it but I don't love the quality. I want to feel like all my clothes from Stitch Fix are perfect. Opinions?

So the verdict is that I still have not decided. One great thing about Stitch Fix is that if you keep all 5 items, you get a 25% off discount. So... the total cost of this box was $326.00. With my $20 styling fee removed and the discount, it will cost $224.50 to keep the entire thing. That breaks down to $45 per item. That doesn't sound so horrible...
Thanks so much for reading this. Please comment if you have anything to say. It's Stitch Fix time again! Now that I had a little taste of what Stitch Fix was all about in my first box, I could not wait for my next one. (Ready my first review here). In my last box I kept a tank top and a scarf so in this box I requested some summer shirts and a dress. I also requested to have the same stylist, Victoria, since I feel she had a general feeling for who I was based on my Pinterest page and my comments about items she had sent last time. Getting the little note from her this time was like hearing from a friend.

Let's get to the clothes!

When I opened up my box this time I was so excited to see some summer colors and fabrics. I also got my first piece of jewelry which I was super excited about. I have been wearing necklaces more and more recently and I love to add to my accessories. There was also a lot more gray in my box which clearly is a favorite color of mine. My Pinterest clothing page is littered with gray items.

*A little disclaimer before we begin- I am NOT a model. My 9 year old daughter is NOT a photographer. I waited a couple weeks to post these because some of the pictures are embarrassing but oh well.

Danielle Long Knot Kecklace by Bancroft, $32
This necklace is fantastic. It's one super long piece that has knots all the way around. You can double or triple loop it to get the look and length you want. It also felt really great and is super versatile. Here's the problem- I don't wear gold very much at all. In my style profile on Stitch Fix it specifically asks you if you prefer gold or silver and I told my stylist that I wear both. That's true...sometimes. I didn't want them to keep an awesome necklace away just because it was gold but I will wear silver WAY more. I emailed Stitch Fix to ask them if I could just switch the necklace and the answer was no. If something doesn't fit, the will send you a different size if it's available but you can't exchange for color. Verdict: RETURNED (But I left a note for my stylist to please please please send me this in a silver finish if one is available in a future fix. I know that if it was silver, I would wear this all the time.
This shirt screams summer. The fabric is a thin and soft material that moves with your body. The straps are so unique and fun. There are three spaghetti straps that join together at the top and then come apart and cris-cross on the back. The back is also a good bit longer than the front. I love black and white and I love polka dots so I was excited to see this in my fix. When I put it on I realized I would likely wear this with my white pants. The fact that my butt is covered is a huge bonus for me. I must say I was on the fence about this top because I don't own a strapless bra (problem, I know) and it is a pet peeve of mine to have bra straps showing. However, I tried this shirt on for my husband and he loved it. He reminded me that we have two relatives getting married soon and there are sure to be showers and picnics coming up. He thinks this is a perfect shirt to wear for some of those. Of course he's right. Verdict: KEPT
I had pinned this shirt on Pinterest so I was super excited to see it in my fix. The model in the picture I pinned was wearing this with nothing on under so the back was completely open. I knew I would need a tank on if I got it and I was so right. First of all, no one my size should have their back hanging out if not in a bathing suit. Second, I tried it on without a tank and when I bent over to get something, it hung completely open and all my front was showing too. No way! But, when paired with a tank top, this shirt is simple in the front and then super fun in the back. I kept a gray tank top in my last fix so I was a bit hesitant to keep this but the price was right and I knew I could add different colored tank tops and wear this a bunch. Verdict: KEPT I was totally right to keep this, I have worn this a ton. I love it with black pants and a red tank too.
Oops! I am so mad! This was actually the best photo and I deleted it when I tried to crop in this close up. Grrr. Oh well, I will try to describe it. This shirt is so incredibly soft. It felt very similar to silk. As you can see from this bad cropped picture, it is a lovely sea green color. It has lovely detail up near the neck too. Now here's the down side, this shirt wrinkled so badly. I am not in the habit of ironing my clothes so this is not something I want to deal with. The other problem were the sleeves. They were a bit shorter than normal sleeves but it had button tabs that you were supposed to use to keep the sleeves rolled up. However, the fabric is so silky, the sleeves unrolled the second you got them up so they were just hanging in a funky way inside the tabs. Basically, it didn't work at all for me. I love that my stylist tried to find me some summer colors and fabrics but this was a miss. Verdict: RETURNED
So I really wish I had lost this photo instead. This is NOT a flattering dress on me. Let me say that on the right person, this dress would be stunning. It's perfect for casual days or dressy nights. The material is SO soft and it felt like wearing pajamas. The problem is that it was too small in all the wrong places. I mean I looked terrible. This was a very quick decision. Verdict: RETURN Now please forget you ever saw this picture.

All in all, it was another great fix. My hope is to get one or two pieces in each fix and I kept two out of this one. I have worn both of them a bunch and I know they are perfect pieces to add to my summer wardrobe. I am scheduled to get my next fix on July 7th and I can't wait! I again asked to keep the same stylist and this time I asked for that necklace in silver, some pants, and some more summer dresses.
This may seem like a spoiler for some people but for me, it's a little taste I need to get me through until my box actually arrives. It's kind of like people who find out the gender of their baby vs. those that don't. You won't know exactly what your items look like but you will have a significant hint. Here's how it works,

First, you can only do this after your box has shipped. While this doesn't seem like a lot in Amazon.com terms, Stitch Fix uses Fed Ex so it takes much longer to arrive after it ships. You will get a lovely little shipping notice in your email. Click it to go to the main Stitch Fix page. It will look like this...
Next click on that tiny thing that says "checkout". Don't panic you are not really buying anything. This take you to the screen where all your items are listed and ready for you to review. Now, clearly you are not going to review the clothes so you don't need to click anything. Just take note of the names of the clothing items...
From here we rely on good old Google or Pinterest. Take the name of the item and copy it exactly. Paste it into a search browser. Typically you will find links to other Stitch Fix reviews where other people received the same item. Now here is the catch- you have NO idea what color or pattern your item will be. It is typically for Stitch Fix to carry an item in multiple colors and patterns. Out of your 5 items, there may also be one or two that you just can't find when you search. Either it's a new item to Stitch Fix or simply no one has done a review on it. So there you go. It's a bit of a cheat however it doesn't tell you everything. The other important thing to remember is not to judge what you are going to get just by using this cheat. You never know how the item is going to feel or look on you. It is super important to try on every item you get in your Stitch Fix box. After all, you are paying for a stylist. May as well give her the benefit of the doubt. You will always be surprised by items you were convinced you wouldn't like.

If you are considering signing up for Stitch Fix I would really appreciate it if you would us this link. I am in no way paid by Stitch Fix but I do get money towards my clothes when you sign up to receive yours.
Let me know if you have any comments or other suggestions. Got any more Stitch Fix tips??Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13524080296236938510noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-379494189531377294.post-73726830030065721682015-05-31T07:20:00.000-04:002015-05-31T09:02:48.339-04:00Stitch Fix Review May 2015

Well I did it. I took the Stitch Fix plunge. I feel like I was the last person on the planet to try Stitch Fix since many of my friends were raving about it. However, after I started talking about my experience with my friends, I noticed many people had never heard of it and many were asking me to share images of the clothing that I received. While I was waiting (not so patiently) for my package to arrive, I scoured the internet for all the info I could on Stitch Fix. In my quest, I found blog after blog of women who were photographing their experience and then posting photos and reviews for all to see. After I got my box I wanted to shout my experience from the rooftops so I thought this blog would be a good place to start.

In case you are as clueless as I was or perhaps are just thinking about joining, here's the scoop. Stitch Fix is a personal styling service that shops for you and sends 5 items of
clothing or accessories to your door, either monthly or on the date you
choose. If you keep nothing, you send it all back in their prepaid envelope
(my mailman received it as outgoing mail from my home mailbox) and they
charge you a $20 styling fee. But if you keep at least one item, that
fee goes toward the cost of your item. Basically, you get YOUR OWN stylist to pick out clothes for you and you are under no obligation to purchase the items. The clothes are extremely high quality (and yes high price tag). BUT my personal goal is to use Stitch Fix to build a wardrobe of great quality, perfect, modern, and stylish clothes that I love rather than a large wardrobe of clothes that I only sort of like. I am in no way sponsored by Stitch Fix and I am not getting paid to write this blog. Those lovely people at Stitch Fix don't even know who I am. Well my lovely stylist, Victoria, "knows"me!

To begin, every Stitch Fix box comes with this lovely little note from your stylist. When you sign up for Stitch Fix you fill out a very detailed style profile and they also request that you create a Pinterest board that is specifically for your stylist to use to get to know your style a bit better. The stylist actually reads your profile and your Pinterest page and picks out clothes after LISTENING to what you like/don't like and wear/won't wear. In my profile I explained that I am primarily a stay at home mom but I do have a part time job that requires me to have a casual business wardrobe as well. I told her my style is romantic, boho, casual chic, and classic. Basically, I want clothes to replace my yoga pants and t-shirt to wear to the park with my kiddos but I also want to have something nice to wear to work. Here is what my stylist wrote to me...

I can just picture Victoria sitting there sifting through clothes finding things just perfect for me based on my Pinterest page. Thank you Victoria for caring so much about me (or at least getting paid to act like it)! Now on to the clothes!

Just to add a bit about me, I am 37 years old with three children and I live in Ohio. I wear a size 14 typically however I seem to be losing a bit of weight (yeah me!) so my sizes may be off a little. A size 14 is the biggest size they have on Stitch Fix so I was terrified everything would be way too small on me and this experience would leave me feeling horrible. In all the blogs I looked through, I purposefully looked at ones where people were about my build so I could see if this service was realistic for me. I found some great Stitch Fix reviews by people who wore my size and this gave be a bit more confidence.

Easton Button Up Sleeveless Blouse
I must say I thought this shirt was going to be better than it was when I took it out of the box. Victoria took this one right out of my Pinterest page. I love navy blue and this type of blouse is perfect for work or to throw on with jeans. I didn't love the material- it was not very soft and didn't feel high quality. Here is what it looks like on. I am so sorry about the selfies taken in my bathroom mirror! My sweet husband rolled his eyes when I asked him if he wanted to photograph me.

The shirt fit a little big (it is a large which is typically my size) and it hung funny. If I bent over you could see right down my shirt. Basically, I didn't like it for the money. Verdict: RETURNED

Georgie Knit Tank
I was super excited to see this in my box. I am really in to asymmetrical bottoms on shirts and the material on this shirt is light and flowy. I also LOVE gray. I knew that I could pair this with jeans, leggings, or even dressier pants. The bonus is that it is sooo soft.

I threw this on with some lavender pants I already own and a long necklace. I had to put a tank top under it but that's how I wear most of my clothes any way. Verdict: KEPT! I have worn this shirt a TON since I got it. It was well worth the money already.

Avia Stripe and Dot Infinity Scarf
I love scarves and I don't have any that really work in the summer. I pinned a bunch of summer looking scarves on my Pinterest account so I was hoping to get one. When I saw this, I was in love. First of all, I love pink. Second, I love the soft, soft, SOFT material. It's like getting a hug every time I wear it. Third, I love the mix of polka dots and stripes.

I can wear this with a white t-shirt and jeans or I can dress up a work outfit with it. I guess this is no secret but- Verdict: KEPT I have worn this a bunch since I got it. It's a perfect accessory.

Alan French Terry Asymmetrical Zip Cardigan
Okay this cardigan is by far the softest, most luxurious piece of clothing I have ever felt. Seriously folks, this is high quality. I love love love the asymmetrical zip feature and the color is totally me.

Despite how wonderful it was, there were issues. First of all, it was huge. I am a solid size L and this was way too big, especially in the sleeves. Instead of feeling put together but comfortable, I felt like I was ready to crawl into bed. My husband tried to convince me to keep it because my office gets cold and he knew I would wear it a ton but I couldn't justify the price for something that wasn't perfect. I threw away the prices before writing this but I know it was over $70. Verdict: RETURNED. I left feedback that I would love this item, in a smaller size, during the fall.

Dilan Distressed Boyfriend Jeans
When I opened the box and saw that I was getting jeans I panicked. How in the world can a stranger pick out jeans for me? I mean jeans are almost as personal as a swim suit. Yikes! But then I put them on. People, these jeans feel like sweatpants. They are seriously the most comfortable pants I have ever put on in my life. I wanted to love these but...

These pants were way to distressed for me. I can handle a bit of distressing but these showed clear through to my thighs and the hold in the left knee was huge. I couldn't figure out why my stylist would pick out jeans full of holes for me. Then I went back and looked at my style profile. I had checked the box that I wanted some "edgy" clothes AND I had pinned almost these exact same jeans on Pinterest. My stylist picked these out because I essentially told her to. After this I made a point to go back and tweak my profile to be a little more "me" not the me I wanted to be. Verdict: RETURNED I did however leave a very detailed review of these jeans to let my stylist know that I would love love love to have these in a different style.

All in all I was super thrilled with the two items I kept. After getting my box, I changed my settings so that I get a box every month now instead of every other month. I just couldn't see waiting that long to get another fabulous, personalized package. It is my goal to never keep something that I don't 100% love and I think I did that with this box. My other goal is to get rid of three items from my closet that I don't really wear or don't love for every item I keep from Stitch Fix. This way I have a smaller but better wardrobe. I am tired of staring at a full closet of clothes and thinking I have nothing to wear.

If you have any questions about Stitch Fix or want to comment on anything I got in my box, please leave me a comment below! I would love to hear from you. If you are thinking about joining Stitch Fix, my suggestion is to do it. Seriously folks, it can't hurt. And in my experience, it was fantastic.

I wanted to take a minute to share this new snack I found for my kids
(and me too). My girls are super skinny and I am always trying to find
ways to get more protein and vitamins into their diet. Recently, I
began buying the Special K protein bars to put in their backpacks for
snack time. With 4 grams of protein, I felt this was a good step up
from the Cascadian granola bars I purchased previously.

Then something wonderful happened, through Bzzagent.com, I got to try the new Fiber One Protein bars. First of all, they are way larger than the Special K kind. Perfect for the afternoon munchies that hit my kids.

Then you just have to take a look at the nutritional content to believe the rest. This is a picture of the nutritional content from the two bars that are generally the same flavor (peanut and chocolate). Check out the difference!

It may be difficult to see so let me lay this out for you...
Protein- SK 4g, FO 10g
Fiber- SK 4g, FO 9g
Calcium- SK 2%, FO 20%
Vitamin C- SK 0%, FO 20%
Sugar- SK 7g, FO 6g

And there is even more. Fiber One is higher in every single vitamin and mineral. The best part is, my family LOVES them. The taste is wonderful. I can't wait to try the other varieties. I know that we have found a new staple in our house.

I know I am not the only person out there with this addiction. Just type in the words "fabric storage" on Pinterest and you will find thousands of other addicts like me looking for ways to store all of their stockpiles. I can tell you, there is something even more fantastic than fabric- It's finding fabric at a GREAT price. Now, I love designer fabrics and those don't often come cheap. I know I am not alone in this either. So... I have recently launched a new Etsy shop where I sell designer fabrics and reasonable prices. I find fantastic deals and pass them on to other sewers!
Check out the shop here...

Now let's get to the best part! To help launch this little shop of mine, I will be giving away two fat quarters of brand new Riley Blake fabric- one polka dot and one chevron. Don't you love these rainbow colors? I can think of SO many uses for these!

To enter, all you have to do is go to my facebook page, "Like" the page and "Share" the post. To get an extra entry, you can "Like" the Etsy shop and then report back to the facebook post to let me know you have done that. This contest ends tonight at 8pm so hurry up and good luck!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13524080296236938510noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-379494189531377294.post-18309908886383769362013-01-03T17:27:00.001-05:002013-01-04T08:33:20.691-05:00More pattern testing!I love trying new sewing projects but always feel a little stressed out about selling them in my shop. I get into this mentality that if I am sewing, it should be something to sell. My kids rarely wear clothes that I make them and not one member of my family has a handmade quilt on their bed. Terrible, I know! This is why I love testing patterns so much. Remember those cute Halloween treat bags I made a few months ago? Adorable and my kids got something fun out of it. This time I responded to a post by Tikatuly Designs asking for people to test her patterns. Here's how it works... selling patterns on Etsy can be very successful and fun; especially ones that have lots of pictures. They are similar to tutorials and usually sell for a few dollars each. However, when you make a pattern, you need to know if other's can follow what you are saying. It's like proof reading for sewing. Here's where I come in! I test the pattern out and in turn get to spend a little free time making something that I am not focused on selling. This time, my little Sophie got a new skirt out of the deal!

Tikatuly Designs is owned by a super nice person from NY. She makes patterns for really fun, modern, children's clothing. Here is a peak at some of her designs...

Aren't they fun?! They are different than most of the other kids clothing patterns out there and I just love the fabrics that she uses.

So, she asked if people would test out the pattern for her asymmetrical skirt. Let me just remind you that I do NOT make clothing often and that is because I can not follow a traditional sewing pattern to save my life. That entire section of the fabric store is off limits to me. However, I love finding tutorials on-line or purchasing Etsy tutorials because they are so much easier to follow.

Well this pattern is no exception. It is PACKED with pictures. Every time you get a bit confused, there is a fantastic picture that shows you exactly what she is talking about. The other great thing, if you get confused at all, you just email her and she writes you back! Fantastic!

Well here is the skirt I made today. Please note that pictures turn out better in natural light so I had my poor little one outside in the snow with dress shoes on. Believe me, she didn't mind. She had a new, funky, skirt and she was in heaven.

So here are some great things about this pattern. Typically when you buy a pattern on-line, it is about 5 pages long. This pattern was 40+ pages. Not great for the ink/paper supply but you really don't have to print it if you don't want to. The reason why it is so long is because it has OPTIONS. And she explains each on in detail.

There were many variations on the waist but I chose to use elastic. I happened to have some extra so this did not require a store trip. I left some of the fabric at the top to make it ruffle a bit more to mimic the ruffly, flowy feel of the skirt.

Then there is the hem. She gives great instruction on how to make handmade fabric ruffle which I know I will try next time but I chose to use some left over large ric-rac I happened to have had on hand. I like it but I think I would change it up next time.

So there is it! I would definitely purchase a pattern from this seller in the future and I certainly hope she lets me test out future patterns.

Anyone else have any great patterns or tutorials out there? I love building my stash of ideas!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13524080296236938510noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-379494189531377294.post-47623403643928247402012-11-29T19:18:00.000-05:002012-11-29T19:19:56.796-05:00Super Easy Painted Christmas CookiesI love making (and eating) Christmas cookies but with three small kids, this activity usually turns daunting and overwhelming pretty easily. If I make cookies that involve icing, the kids get to turn into little artists but the icing is hard for them to use and makes a huge mess. If I choose drop cookies or something that doesn't need icing, the kids don't really get to do much. So I turned to google the other day and found a couple recipes for painted cookies. After tweaking them a bit based on what I had in the pantry, we got to work tonight. This was such a FUN, EASY, and BEAUTIFUL cookie experience. There was little to no stress and everyone was happy. My kitchen even stayed a little cleaner than normal.

So here goes, first you make sugar cookies. I cheated and used a boxed mix that I found on sale a couple months ago for less than a dollar. We rolled them all out and cut out all the shapes.

As I filled a cookie sheet with shapes, we put them in the fridge to keep a bit better. When they were all cut, we got to work on the decorating part. Here is the best part- it's 2 ingredients! I took a mini muffin pan (an ice cube tray works well too) and poured evaporated milk in each little spot. The I added different colors of food coloring to each little area and mixed well with a toothpick. Since I had both the regular and the gel coloring, we tried both. They both worked really well.

Each child got a small clean paintbrush and a plate full of UNBAKED
cookies. They painted all of them and then we threw them in the oven
for a few minutes based on the box instructions. Presto! Fantastic,
totally kid friendly, cookies.
As you may remember, we decided to finish our basement last year. Up until then, I had been working in whatever section of the basement I could find that would hold all my stuff. Because of a lack of storage and organization, my sewing stuff spilled out of bins and spread throughout almost the entire basement. It was a mess!

My sweet and handy husband decided that we needed extra space in our house and that I needed a more permanent area to work. Since my Etsy shop has really taken off, this has clearly become a necessity. Even though I have a pretty successful business now, I still view sewing as a hobby so I had some serious guilt about using too much of the basement (our living area) for just myself. My husband convinced me that even hobbies deserve their own spot, especially since I had been doing this for so long. Clearly this is not a hobby that is just going to blow over when I find something more fun.

Last Wednesday the carpet was installed and by Friday I was at IKEA trying to buy the finishing touches for my space. Now, my area is small (10' x 5'). My 7 year old refers to it as my sewing nook instead of a studio. I really needed to use the vertical space as much as possible. Are you ready for the reveal? Here goes!

This is an overall look and I will show you the other areas a bit more close up. The two main table areas are some inexpensive tables I had from Joann's. One is a cutting table and the other is a sewing table. I am not in love with them because they fall apart when moved but they are working well for me. I still need to get some art and color on the walls to make it a bit more personal but you get the idea. Now, I will admit that you are not seeing the bins and bins of finished projects, minky dot fabric, upholstery fabric, and off season fabrics that I have. Those I am storing in the crawl space section of our basement so they are out of the way. I am not sure how that is going to work since I do use that stuff almost daily but it's working out so far. Now let's take a more in depth tour :-).

I have had this thread thing forever and never had a place to hang it. I put my most used threads on here and it is so nice being able to reach up and grab what I need. The best part, I actually put the threads back when I am finished with them. Miracle! I have extra embroidery threads in cases down below. My small computer is right by my machine which is a must since some of my embroidery designs come off the computer. I also have that magnetic board which holds all my product labels so I never forget to grab one when I am stitching something together.

This is the majority of my fabric. I used comic book boards to wrap all the fabric which makes them stand up beautifully. The tops of the shelves are a bit too short for the boards so I have all my pre-cuts and quilt bundles up there.

Welcome to my shipping area. These IKEA kitchen storage things are perfect. I have my rulers hanging since this is also near my cutting table. Some of my rulers didn't fit quite well so the hubs promised to drill a couple new holes in them to make them work better. The rest is all the stuff I need for shipping...business cards, thank you notes, tape, string, stickers, etc.

This is the rest of my shipping area and some more storage. The drawer cabinet holds my poly-mailers, as well as half completed projects. The magnetic board is perfect for hanging up my pending orders so I can keep track of what I need to work on next.

The two shelves at the top hold all the bins of supplies that I have. The bins are clear so I can easily see what's in them. (What isn't shown is that the shelves fell down the night after these pictures were taken because I installed them wrong. Oops! My hubs has promised to fix my mistakes but he is going to let me live with a downed shelf for a couple days as punishment for not waiting for his help in the first place. Love it.) My ribbons were a huge problem before. I used a curtain hanger from IKEA for storage. Now I just unwrap a roll when I get it and put it on these cards. This way I can see exactly what I have and what I need to buy. The cards easily un-clip when I need to use them.

To the right is another kitchen storage bar thingy. This holds my scissors, rotary cutters, and other necessities.

All in all, I am SO in love with my new space. I have a ton of work to do and this makes it an absolute pleasure to do anything. The rest of the basement has room for our new couch and TV (coming later this week) and some of the kids' larger toys. Well, I better get back to sewing! This room is screaming to be used.

I LOVE seeing other people's work areas. If you have any pictures of your work space, please feel free to post them here. I will be sure to check them out.

Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13524080296236938510noreply@blogger.com10tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-379494189531377294.post-22834349681805807212012-08-06T14:24:00.001-04:002012-08-06T14:24:28.642-04:00Halloween Pattern TestingI have a confession, I can't sew from a formal pattern to save my life. I see the books of patterns in the fabric stores and dream about the day that I create some spectacular formal dress for one of my daughters. That's never going to happen. Plain and simple, I just don't get it.

Now tutorials, those are a different story. These days the Internet is FULL of bloggers ready and willing to post their tutorials on how to make this or that. Etsy sellers also sell their simple patterns and tutorials that arrive to through your email in simple clear instructions. They put pictures, explanations, and sometimes even videos to help make the process smoother. The other bonus, most of the time the items made from tutorials don't have to be that exact. SWEET! A small imperfection here or there doesn't really matter when you are making a one size fits all dress or a decorative towel.

When fellow blogger Sheryl from Sher's Creative Blog Space asked some fellow Etsy folks to test out one of her sewing patterns for Halloween treat bags, I was all in. It's a win-win. She needed to make sure that her tutorial was perfect before selling it on Etsy and I am always up for trying a free simple sewing pattern.

I am so impressed with the results. The bags were extrememly easy to make, come in three sizes, and can be as simple or as decorated as you want to make them. Here are some of the ones that I made...

The large one has a ghost appliqué which was included in the pattern and I added my daughter's name to it to add a personal touch. It is the perfect size for a nice Halloween gift or even to trick-or-treat with. The smaller one is adorable and great for Halloween treat bags. These bags are so easy to make and are a great way to use up scrap pieces of fabric. They would be wonderful for Birthday party treat bags or for goodie bags.

The best part of having people test her pattern is seeing all the variations of bags people made. Sheryl had 5 of us test them out and all 5 had very different and uniquely wonderful results. Check out all the rest of bags here.

Now if you would like to make some of these bags of your own, head to Sheryl's Etsy shop and purchase the pattern. I promise, they are super fun and easy to make.
